The Story

Just a few minutes from our classrooms stands one of the most important museums in Asia: the Southern Branch of the National Palace Museum, in Taibao City. While the original museum in Taipei is famous for Chinese treasures, the Southern Branch has a wider mission. It is an Asian Art and Culture Museum — a place that tells the story of the whole continent.

The museum opened in 2015. Its address — 888 Gugong Boulevard — sits beside the high-speed rail station and the seat of Chiayi County. For an international traveller stepping off the train, the Southern Branch is often their first impression of southern Taiwan. That is exactly why a docent — a trained guide who explains the artworks — matters so much.

In this course you will become a young docent. You will not memorise everything; instead you will learn how to introduce one gallery, describe one object, and answer a visitor’s question — all in clear, friendly English. By the final lesson you will give a short tour of your own.

“A docent is not someone who knows everything. A docent is someone who helps you see.”
