The Story

This gallery is full of sculptures of the Buddha and other holy figures, made across many centuries and many lands. We approach them here as art and history. Buddhism began in India and travelled along trade routes to Central Asia, China, Korea, Japan, and Southeast Asia.

As the teaching travelled, the images changed. The same calm face might be carved in bronze, stone, or wood; gilded with gold or left plain. The posture and the position of the hands — called mudra — carry meaning: a raised palm can mean “do not fear.”

For a docent, the key is respect. You can describe the material, the age, the calm expression, and the journey of an idea across Asia — and let visitors feel its peace for themselves. You are guiding their eyes, not their beliefs.

“Follow one calm face across a continent, and you have followed an idea travelling.”
